Regulated Medical Waste
Program Description
The Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) program was created to comply with all local, state and federal regulations pertaining to the safe transportation and packaging of waste that may be contaminated by blood, body fluids, or other potentially infectious materials.
Reusable Sharps Program
The Reusable Sharps program was established to reduce the amount of plastics that end up the landfill. A licensed Medical Waste Contractor replaces reusable sharps containers at numerous locations throughout UK HealthCare. The full containers are removed and shipped offsite for ultimate disposal. The containers are emptied and sterilized for reuse. The locations are serviced routinely, and the frequency is based on the volume generated at each location.
Red Bag Waste - Hospital locations
RMW is generated at numerous locations throughout UK HealthCare and is transported to a centralized area where it is shipped off site through a licensed Medical Waste contractor.
Included in this category are Pathological wastes. Pathological waste includes any detached human or animal organs, tissues, and body parts used in research. This category of waste is ultimately incinerated and is tracked and labeled separately than normal RMW.
Red Bag Waste - Clinic locations
Red bag waste is generated at various University owned/operated clinics throughout the state and that waste is picked up directly at the clinic by a licensed Medical Waste Contractor.
