I am Kansas
Subversive Correspondence, The Gallery at Willesden Green, London, United Kingdom, 2009

I have often driven from Kentucky to Colorado and take the back roads through Kansas. I noticed that my body tingles and I feel strangely at home in Kansas. Reflecting on my experience I realized that I am Kansas. I have eaten these cows, this wheat all of my life. My body is Kansas dirt and I needed this dirt. I used Facebook, contacting the -I grew up on a dirt road in Kansas- group. I chose Kim, a middle-aged woman in fancy gown and wrote to her explaining that I am an artist who needed dirt. We struck up a correspondence about place and home. After a few letters and her willingness to help me since she grew up next to land artist, Stan Herd, she sent me a box of Kansas in the mail.
