(31 of 40) Tooth Eruption This is a photomicrograph of an erupting tooth. The formation of the crown of the tooth has been completed and root formation is starting at the region of the cervical loop - now known as the epithelial diaphragm (A). In the human, root formation continues during active tooth eruption and with deciduous teeth it is completed 1 to 1.5 years after the tooth appears in the oral cavity. With permanent teeth it takes about twice as long for root formation to be completed. At the cuspal end of the tooth, the reduced enamel epithelium fuses with the oral epithelium during eruption (B).
