IT Strategic Plan | 12 Action Item 2:2 High-quality, consistently branded, interactive, accessible, online course content that contributes to student success is essential and expected by students. Online and hybrid courses must be rooted in strong online learning principles and pedagogy. Student and Academic Life (SAL), the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT), and the Office of Faculty Advancement should collaborate with ITS to build capacity, skills, and expectations regarding online learning for faculty and students. The eLearning Innovation Initiative (eLII), launched in 2013 and concluding in 2018, provided nearly $3 million in funding to launch online degree programs, online courses, hybrid courses, and expand the skill sets of over 150 faculty members from across the University. The initiative focused on improving student learning outcomes, student success, engagement, and retention by leveraging pedagogies and technologies; enhancing UK’s curricular offerings through creative course design and application of learning technologies; expanding instructional methods; implementing quality assurance methodology for developing high-quality instruction; and developing faculty-driven scholarship of teaching and learning to promote reflective and research- driven teaching and learning practices at UK. The excellent work, progress, and efforts of the collaboration, established by the Office of the Provost, ITS, and CELT, cannot be forgotten. Such efforts should continue by incorporating more campus partners and calling on faculty who participated in the initial years of the program to establish future programming and share best practices across the University community. Future programs should not only include faculty, but include teaching assistants and students. Students must be better informed before deciding to enroll in courses with online content and assignments. Introductory courses (e.g., UK 101, 201) could be leveraged to provide students with the knowledge needed to prepare them for success in these courses.
