(10 of 16) Apical Foramen As a tooth erupts further into the oral cavity cementum (A) is added to the end of the root to compensate for the eruptive movement. The opening of the pulp chamber at the apical end of the root is referred to as the apical foramen (B). This opening was initially formed by dentin (C) but is eventually redefined by cementum. The fibers of the periodontal ligament (D) also must gradually realign themselves. Note the layer of osteoid (E) that lines the alveolar bone. This is indicative of new bone deposition over existing alveolar bone (F). |
