Writing as Leaders. . .
Writing during
your university years poses specific challenges. Yes, your U.K. degree is
designed to help you graduate and secure a good job. But as the flagship university in the
state, U.K. also has the
privilege and the responsibility of schooling future leaders of the many
communities that comprise our commonwealth.
Citizens of this state expect a lot from U.K. graduates.
Their taxes, like your tuition dollars, go to support the venture. Your education is important to the success
of the commonwealth. They count on you
to be broadly educated so that you can contribute to and improve the quality
life in whatever community you become part of.
The “Town and
Gown” series is designed to prepare you to be a successful leader in the 21st-century
community and workplace. Yes, you will
be working to further the work begun in ENG 101—refining your own voice,
learning how to combine style and genre more effectively, producing longer, more
fluent essays that employ arguments of greater complexity. You will also be learning the importance of
effectively and creatively presenting your ideas (electronically and on
paper) to diverse and digitally-aware audiences.
