Schooling Narratives:
A Web Essay Assignment

(continued)

I’ve chosen these pieces because I think it’s important for those beginning college to know that behind academic success is usually buried some struggle and even some failure.

I, for example, failed chemistry lab.  I showed up to the final exam and the instructor said to me, “Why are you here?  We’ve had eight unknown experiments to solve; you’ve missed them all.  There’s no way you can pass this course.  There’s just no need for you to take the test.”  Though at the time it felt like the end of the world, I eventually received a Ph.D. (in English) and now work teaching in a university.  (Granted, they keep me away from dangerous chemicals.)

In retrospect, I realize I wasn’t a hopeless chemistry case; I just didn’t know where to go for help or when I should have gone.  I learned that lesson eventually through trial and error over the five years I was an undergraduate and passed my other courses.  But I have to say, I wish I would have made it my business to learn it sooner.
