"There are four instruments in the woodwind family: the flute, the oboe, the clarinet, and the bassoon. Sometimes, though, other family members follow along. The flute sometimes brings his sister the piccolo, the English horn comes with the oboe, and the bassoon will drag along the contrabassoon. Sometimes the orchestra even asks the saxophone to join them."

"The flute looks like a narrow tube with a row of holes covered by keys. It is usually silver in color."

"The player blows air across the small hole near one end in the mouthpiece to produce a sound that can be either soft and mellow or high and piercing."

"The piccolo is much smaller that the flute. Therefore, when it piccolo plays along with the orchestra, it sings in high, piercing sounds."
