(2 of 40) Dental Arch and Gingival Groove This the left half of a palate from a newborn. The dental arch (A) can be identified as a raised semi-circular ridge. The groove (B) indicates the site where the epithelium that lines the oral cavity has grown into the underlying connective tissue. This invagination gives rise to the dental lamina and through subsequent development, the dental organs. This invagination of epithelium appears at about the sixth week in utero.
