Submandibular Ganglion

The lingual nerve passes close to the submandibular gland. Hanging from this nerve, and often embedded in the submandibular gland is an accumulation of parasympathetic postganglionic neuron cell bodies (A). Collective-ly they form the submandibular ganglion. A connective tissue capsule (B) surrounds these neurons. Postganglionic para-sympathetic neurons are found close to, or in the walls, of the organ they innervate. The remainder of the nuclei belong to the supporting cells of the PNS - Schwann cells or fibroblasts.
