TEM of Striated Secretory Duct

This is an electron micrograph of a cross section through a cell composing the wall of a secretory duct in the parotid gland. Mito-chondria (A) are concentrated in the basal cytoplasm of the secretory cells. They are predominantly oriented with their long axes perpendicular to the base of the cell. It is the parallel folding of the basal cell membrane (B), together with this perpendicular arrange-ment of the mitochondria, that gives the basal regions of these cells their striated appearance in light microscopy.

Legend

A - mitochondria
B - folding of basal cell membrane

C - nucleus of duct cell
