Undersurface of the Tongue

The lower layer on this image is the mucosa that lines the floor of the mouth (under the tongue). It reflects up onto the ventral surface of the tongue above (A). Note the glands (B) and fat cells in the submucosa of the floor of the mouth. The height of the connective tissue papillae in this region is also relatively low. The epithelium is non-keratinized stratified squamous.
