The story "The Prisoners Who Vanished " in the second issue of the Silver Age Atom's own comic book features the return of one of his first foes, Carl Ballard from Showcase 34. Ballard has rediscovered the secret, stolen from alien Kulan Dar, of using Europium for teleportation. He is again using this power to carry out
crimes, with members of his gang mysteriously disappearing from prison. Not surprisingly, Ballard is again defeated by the Atom. At the end of the story, it is revealed that Ballard himself is allergic
to Europium – surely an unusual allergy – and cannot use it to teleport himself!
