Nelson County had an estimated population of 34,277 in 1999 with over 90 percent on public water. The projected population for 2008 was 43,113 with 99 percent served by a water utility. The Water Resource Development Commission has prepared a report on water-supply infrastructure in Nelson County. It is estimated that there are over 200,000 water wells in Kentucky.
