Coal Geology along Kentucky Highway 15 Wednesday, Sept 19, Depart 8:00am, Return 6:00pm, $45* Transportation, lunch, and a guidebook will be provided. Limited to 22 participants Stephen Greb and Cortland Eble, Kentucky Geological Survey, field trip leaders New roadcuts along KY highway 15 near Jackson, Kentucky, approximately one and a half hours east of Lexington, provide excellent exposures of upper Lower and lower Middle Pennsylvanian strata on the western margin of the central Appalachian basin. Controls on coal formation and Pennsylvanian stratigraphy will be investigated, as will facies and sequence stratigraphic surfaces, including examples of marine flooding surfaces and scour-based sequence boundaries. If time allows, there will also be an opportunity to examine mountaintop mining and post-mine land uses of mined lands near Hazard, KY.
