(7 of 20) Ground Section Through Cementum Identify dentin (A), Tomes' granular layer (B), and primary cementum (C). The cementum layer in this section appears to have two distinct regions: That portion of the cementum closest to the dentin that contains black linear structures oriented at right angles to the surface of the cementum (1). These are disintegrated Sharpey's fibers that leave empty channels behind. A typically clear layer of cementum not demonstrating the empty Sharpey's fiber channels (2). The thin clear zone, between Tomes' granular layer and the primary cementum, is called the hyaline layer of Hopewell-Smith (D). The hyaline layer is usually considered to be part of the dentin although it has been suggested that it is a product of the root sheath cells rather than of odontoblasts or cementoblasts.
