(17 of 30) Dorsum of Adolescent Tongue The tongue possesses four distinctive types of lingual papillae. The round pinkish spots on this tongue are fungiform papillae (A). This type of papilla is more numerous in younger individuals. The reddish coloration of these papillae is due to the underlying capillaries of the lamina propria core containing red blood cells. This coloration shows through their non-keratinized surface. The whitish surrounding regions (B) are the keratinized surfaces of the filiform papillae
