Comparative Summary of David Moberg's "Suite Crimes" and Doug Bandow's
"Social Responsibility: A Conservative View"

On the issue of corporate responsibility or the lack thereof, David Moberg and Doug Bandow clearly express differing views. Moberg argues that corporations are very irresponsible because they are the authors of individual irresponsibility among the American people, only hold values that are in the main interests of their shareholders, neglect accountability for wrong-doings in the environment, work force or community, and do not contribute to the needs of society. Arguing to the contrary, Bandow sees that corporations are not irresponsible because they are not intended to advocate the social interests of others and should not be expected to do so, are created for the specific duties of making profits to fulfill the people's desires that hold stakes, and do benefit society when left to effectively operate.
Bandow and Moberg both hold the position that corporations have no right to infringe on anyone's rights by reckless operation. However, their most glaring contradictions are apparent on the issue of government in business and the definition of corporate responsibility itself. Moberg recalls that the government has limited the liability of corporations with the passage of laws that guarantee them the same rights as citizens and with the removal of charters. He concludes that these concessions have allowed corporations to operate irresponsibly without government or citizen control. On the other hand, Moberg holds the opinion that there is no place for government control or mandates in business. Finally, as Bandow defines corporate responsibility as businesses looking after the needs of people, Moberg defines it as businesses simple being profitable enterprises.
