Carboxylic acid derivative interconversion reactions in peptide synthesis

Biological systems use the same organic chemistry reactions that organic chemists use in the laboratory. For example, proteins are made by condensing amines and carboxylic acids to give amides. Three reactions are used by the peptide-synthesis machinery:

Of course, enzymes are involved to catalyze and guide each of these reactions in the desired direction. The three reactions are illustrated below.
