Finding Arguments
in Lived Experience

Explicit argument places a high
value on exploring and qualifying assumptions, on providing evidence for
claims, on taking fairly into account what others might reasonably think and say
about your topic. For this reason, last semester,
you learned to use a portion of the rich resources the library has to offer:
consumer publications, government documents, reference works (subject
encyclopedias and specialized dictionaries), statistical sources, newspaper
archives. You will need to use all these
skills this semester. Your instructor
will review these quickly, but he or she is working under the assumption that
