Objectives

To develop an appreciation for data as a resource in an organization and to discuss the technical issues in managing data. Topics to be included are as follows

 

(1)  Basic concepts of data base systems and the advantages of using a data base approach for information processing;

 

(2)  Fundamentals of file organization and data structures necessary to understand data models and the operation of a data base management system;

 

(3) File and database design process.  This includes conceptual data model, logical and physical data base design;

 

(4) Issues involved in implementing database applications and managing a database systems;

 

(5)  Hands-on experience with a relational data base management system (ACCESS 2002) for the development of data base applications.

 

Assignments

There will be assignments involving the use of ACCESS 2002, written assignments, and a group project.  Details for these assignments will be announced in class with at least one week's notice.  Except for the group project, all other assignments are individual works (i.e., no copying from others or group work).

 

Quizzes:

To encourage student preparedness, attendance, attention, and participation, a total of 8 concept quizzes will be given during the semester, each marked on a scale of 10, with a guaranteed minimum of 5 awarded for merely being present. Of the 8 quizzes, only the best 7 will count. There will be no "make-up" quizzes, for any reason.
