List all the techniques we learned in class for determining systems requirements. For each of these techniques, describe a hypothetical situation in which it would be an effective way to collect information during this early phase of systems analysis.

Assignment 2

Due: October 10, 2002

Complete the following:

1.      Problems #6-10 on pg.281 of chapter 9.  Use a CASE tool to complete problems #7, #8, #9, and #10.

  1. Problem #1 on pg.328 of chapter 10.  For part (b), rewrite the data dictionary entry using a CASE tool.
  2. Problems #1-3 on pg.378 of chapter 11.

Access assignment 1

Due: October 24, 2002

 

1.       Create a folder on your computer/diskette (if you are in the lab, create this folder in the D: drive) called ####HW1 where #### is the last four digits of your student number.

2.       Create another folder on your computer/diskette (if you are in the lab, create this folder in the D: drive) called xxxx where xxxx is your full name.

3.       Download data files from the Web:

(a)    Start your browser and enter the URL http://www.course.com/catalog/downloads.cfm?isbn=0-619-02089-X

(b)   Click on the link "2089-Xd.exe"

(c)    When the Save As dialog box opens, save the file 2089-Xd.exe onto the folder bearing your full name (i.e., folder xxxx) and click "save"

(d)   Double click the file 2089-Xd.exe and unzip the files onto the folder xxxx.

 

 

If the last 4-digit of your student number is 1000-3999, then do these:

4.       Copy the files Clients.mdb and TVandVCR.gif from xxxx\Tutorial.05\Cases onto the folder bearing your student number (i.e., folder ####HW1).

5.       Open the file Clients.mdb from your ####HW1 folder and rename all the tables with your name attached to it (e.g., Anita's Shoot).

6.       Complete tasks 2-10 of Case 1 on page AC5.61 of your Access text.  Skip printing the results of your query.

7.       Turn in a printed copy of task 9i (Note: this is the only printout you need to turn in)

8.       Submit your ####HW1 folder electronically (see instructions below).

 

 

If the last 4-digit of your student number is 4000-9999, then do these:

4.       Copy the files Delivery.mdb and PlaceSet.gif from xxxx\Tutorial.05\Cases onto the folder bearing your student number (i.e., folder ####HW1).

5.       Open the file Delivery.mdb from your ####HW1 folder and rename all the tables with your name attached to it (e.g., Anita's Order).

6.       Complete tasks 2-8, 12 and 14 of Case 2 on page AC5.63 of your Access text.  Skip printing the results of your query.

7.       Turn in a printed copy of task 12g (Note: this is the only printout you need to turn in)

8.       Submit your ####HW1 folder electronically (see instructions below).

Assignment 3

Due: November 14, 2002

Consider the cap and gown ordering system that we discuss in class with the assumption that you are developing a system to accept orders on-line from students.  Complete the following:

1.      Identify flaws in the design of the order form given (as if you were to use the same form for on-line data entry). 

2.      Redesign the form to correct the flaws identified in (1) using a CASE tool.

3.      What other on-line forms and/or reports should be produced by the system?

4.      Develop an ER diagram for the cap and gown ordering system using a CASE tool.

5.      Transform the ER diagram in (4) into a set of 3NF relations.

5.       Open the file Finstat.mdb from your ####HW2 folder and rename all the tables with your name attached to it (e.g., Anita's Company).

6.       Modify the first record in the Company table by changing the CompanyName field value to your name in the format: first name, space, last name.  Close the table.

7.       Complete tasks 3-14, and 16-18 of Additional Case 1 on page ADD1-8 of your Access text.  Skip printing the results of your query, forms, and reports.  (Note: you can create the switchboard without using the Switchboard Manager)

8.       Open the Industry Summary for 2004 report in design view.  Add a label box in the report footer section and enter your name in it.  Format your name with 12-point Arial bold font.  Turn in a printed copy of this report. (Note: this is the only printout you need to turn in)

9.       Submit your ####HW2 folder electronically (see instructions below).

 

 

If the last 4-digit of your student number is 4000-9999, then do these:

4.       Copy the files Pet.mdb, Petlogo.bmp, Petfish.bmp, and Petdog.bmp from xxxx\AddCases onto the folder bearing your student number (i.e., folder ####HW2).

5.       Open the file Pet.mdb from your ####HW2 folder and rename all the tables with your name attached to it (e.g., Anita's Order).

6.       Modify the 5th record (i.e., CustomerNum is 128) in the Customer table by changing the CustomerName field value to your name in the format: first name, space, last name.  Close the table

7.       Complete tasks 3-12 Case 2 on page ADD9-13 of your Access text.  Skip printing the results of your query, forms, and reports.  (Note: you can create the switchboard without using the Switchboard Manager)

8.       Turn in a printed copy of page 5 (i.e., CustomerNum is 128) of the Customer Statement report (Note: this is the only printout you need to turn in)
