PI: Matt Poore, NCSU

Abstract:

The NC Leadership & Cattle Handling for Women program is designed to promote self-confidence for women in the cattle industry by giving them hands-on educational opportunities while promoting farm safety. The workshops will provide hands-on learning in the subject areas of fencing building and repair, tractor safety and chainsaw safety during natural disaster recovery. The goal of the workshops is to help prepare the women producers for storm damage to their farming operations and have a farm protocol in place to reduce the stress on the farm and the animal. The two-day workshops to be held in North Carolina and will also include lectures on how to prepare your family and farm for future natural disasters and storm recovery. The workshops will be limited to 20 female participants at each of the two locations (Piedmont and Mountain region) in order to provide a non-intimidating atmosphere and to allow the participants (n=40) to practice the proper hands-on techniques taught by the instructors. These workshops will be limited to women participants over the age of 18 in order to promote networking, comradery and safety.
