To reduce the exposure to backover accidents in three South Carolina counties through the installation of back-up beepers on student used equipment (i.e. lawn mowers, lawn tractors, tractors, etc.) used by agricultural education classes on school grounds.
-
To increase awareness in the targeted rural communities in South Carolina of backover incidents in youth and encourage installation of low cost back-up beepers.
-
To conduct a pre-post evaluation of the project implementation, increased knowledge/awareness of back-up beepers, and installation of back-up beepers for reducing backover accidents and fatalities, using surveys of approximately 270 agricultural education students in three county high schools, and interviews with teachers.
-
To disseminate findings from this study with agricultural educators at the state level and nationally.
In this proposed feasibility project, Back-up Beepers and back over incident curriculum would be integrated into required course work on site and supervised by professional agricultural educators and are well within the skill set for new agricultural education standards for project- based, real world, high impact learning goals. Increased installations of back-up beepers will reduce the probability of back over injuries or fatalities in the targeted South Carolina communities.
