Universal Design creates products and environments that are as usable as possible by as many people as possible. Universal Design strategies are utilized to make products, systems, buildings, classrooms, and other environments that are accessible to everyone.
The Undergraduate Certificate in Universal Design is offered as a partnership between the School of Interiors (College of Design) and Human Development Institute. Students and professionals of all disciplines can study and benefit from Universal Design’s broad set of strategies that promote participation and access for all people. This certificate program also includes an overview of Universal Design for Learning.
The principles of Universal Design and Universal Design for Learning are useful in a variety of degree programs and career fields including education, design, architecture, engineering, social work, psychology, the arts, and more.

*With permission of the certificate director, students may complete a second elective course in lieu of a second practicum.
HDI350, 400, and 500 are offered in a synchronous format, but can be attended via Zoom or in person. The list of approved electives includes courses across the university with both face-to-face and online options represented.
For current University of Kentucky students, no additional application for the Universal Design Certificate is needed. Use the myUK GPS tool to add the certificate to your program of study. Then, register for HDI 350 in the Fall semester. If you are not a current University of Kentucky student, you will need to complete the Undergraduate Admission Application and choose the Universal Design Certificate as your program of study.
