The Undergraduate Certificate in Power and Energy (UCPE) is built on a series of foundational courses supplemented by a broad array of more advanced elective courses related to power and energy. These advanced courses cover both conventional and emerging areas, including smart grid systems, distributed generation, system protection, energy storage, solar power systems, biofuels and others.
The Undergraduate Certificate program coincides with the requirements for a BS in Biosystems, Electrical, Chemical, Computer, Manufacturing, Materials, Mechanical, or Mining Engineering by fitting certificate courses into the required and elective courses of the various majors. This takes advantage of the fact that each major already has some courses within its existing curriculum relevant to power and energy.
The structure of the certificate program will allow certification through proper selection of elective courses that are available to the student. For example, in electrical engineering, there already exists a curriculum track in electric power that includes many power-related courses. Such courses also exist in other departments, including courses in power generation, air pollution control, biofuels, building energy modeling and energy modeling for manufacturing.
