The Dance Minor is open to students from any college and offers instruction in ballet, jazz, modern and musical theatre dance in addition to choreography and improvisation. The program stages an annual concert every January.
Dance is a good addition to the curriculum of students in other artistic disciplines who want to expand their skills. For students who do not want to major in dance, but want to continue their dance education or continue to grow as a dance artist, this is an exciting and challenging program. Our dance minor students have a variety of major tracks, from education to chemistry. An audition is required to participate in the annual Dance Concert and other performances.
In addition to coursework, students have opportunities to attend workshops, master classes and performances, as well as participate in festivals such as the American College Dance Festival.
"Being in the theatre and dance program here at UK has been exactly what I needed and still need. I have made multiple connections and have traveled around the U.S. going to different dance festivals, intensives, and conferences. Without the Department’s support, none of this would have happened. I've even had the pleasure of choreographing a mainstage show my second year in the program. I can't tell you how grateful I am for the support of the faculty and how much they really care and want all of the students to succeed.”
Alum, Dance Minor
The Minor in Dance in the University of Kentucky’s Department of Theatre and Dance develops and nurtures versatile contemporary dancers. The minor offers students opportunities to perform, develop technical and improvisational skills, deepen dance inquiry and cultivate their own choreographic voice. The minor provides students the tools and experience necessary to bridge their primary field of study and personal interests with dance.
