The Minor in Art History focuses on the development of the visual arts, particularly the histories of "high" or "fine" art, within a broad liberal arts tradition. Students study artistic images, objects and events representing diverse cultures within a global context.

Careers

Students of Art History & Visual Studies will graduate with valuable, marketable skills to include visual analysis, critical writing and thinking and a sophisticated understanding of the increasingly visual culture we all live and work in. Students have undertaken internships on-campus at the UK Art Museum and in nationally-recognized institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

University of Kentucky student Elizabeth Glass recently participated in a highly competitive internship at the Cloisters Museum and Garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. At the Metropolitan, Glass mainly worked at the Cloisters giving tours and helped maintain and expand the department’s collection database.

Classes & Requirements

What You'll Study

Art History courses put strong emphasis on the acquisition of skills in critical reading, visual analysis, problem solving, art historical research, and written and oral communication. Students from any college may choose to minor in art history. 

 

Minor Requirements 

  • At least one course must be in non-Western Art history & Visual Studies
  • At least three courses must be at the 300-level or above
  • Select two courses from the following:
    • A-H 101 - Introduction to Visual Studies
    • A-H 104 - African Art and Its Global Impact
    • A-H 105 - World Art Before 1400
    • A-H 106 - Renaissance to Modern Art
  • One applied course in the College of Fine Arts 
    • Choose from Art Studio (A-S prefix), Art Education (A-E prefix), or costume, make-up or set design from the Department of Theatre and Dance
  • Four additional courses in Art History & Visual Studies (A-H prefix)
