At the University of Kentucky, pre-professional paths are interest areas that students complete alongside their UK Core requirements and academic program of study. Pre-professional advisors offer support and guidance to University of Kentucky students, from all majors, interested in pursuing admission to law school. In addition to outlining coursework options and guiding students through application processes, pre-professional advisors also direct students to University programs, such as UK Education Abroad or UK Service and Community Engagement, that foster well-rounded law school applicants.
Students planning to pursue a career path in law should meet routinely with their primary academic advisor and pre-professional advisors in the Stuckert Career Center. Students can schedule an appointment with a pre-professional advisor in the Stuckert Career Center through Handshake or by emailing UKCareerCenter@uky.edu.
Students are advised to explore the websites of the law schools in which they are interested and to familiarize themselves with admissions standards at those schools. Almost all law schools require students to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). The LSAT is designed to help predict your success in law school by measuring the skills necessary to succeed in that program.
Some law schools now accept the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) in lieu of the LSAT; however, the LSAT is still the preferred exam for most law school admissions. If you have questions about taking the LSAT vs. the GRE, talk with a pre-professional advisor.
Additional information is available from the Law School Admission Council.

Read MoreWhile a broad, liberal arts education is generally considered to be an excellent preparation for law school, there is no fixed, comprehensive pre-law curriculum prescribed by any American law school. In general, pre-law students should develop rigorous study habits, become skilled in clear and logical communication, and select courses that can enhance critical reading, writing, and analytical skills. Students are advised to choose the major that is the best fit in terms of personal interests, strengths, and alternative career options. There is no "right" major for law school and pre-law students are encouraged to work with a pre-professional advisor to help with major exploration.
The pre-law pathway provides guidance for students preparing to apply to any law school. While similar, its requirements may differ from those of the UK Rosenberg College of Law.
