Scripting

The Importance of Scripting: Making sure the same language is being used with employees, students, patients and visitors about the policy ensures a firm, polite and compassionate message.

Example: "Hello, my name is ______ (your name) and I am a(n) ______ (position) here with the University of Kentucky. Are you aware that we do not allow the use of tobacco products of any kind on campus? I ask you to please respect our policy and put your cigarette out (or other tobacco product) and dispose of it in a trash can. Instead of using tobacco, we have nicotine replacement available for a discounted price to manage your cravings and help you feel more comfortable."

Approaching a violator using an e-cigarette or a device similar:

Example: Hello, my name is ______ (your name) and I am a(n) ______ (position) here with the University of Kentucky. Are you aware that we do not allow the use of tobacco products of any kind on campus, including e-cigarettes? E-cigarettes are regulated by the FDA as a tobacco product. Instead of using tobacco, we have nicotine replacement available for a discounted price to manage your cravings and help you feel more comfortable. I ask you to please respect our policy and put away your device."
