Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake on April 18, 2008 in Southern Illinois near Bellmont, Illinois
A series of minor to moderate earthquakes has occurred in Southern Illinois, the first of which occurred on April 18, 2008 at 09:37:00 UTC (5:37 AM EDT). The magnitude 5.2 event was followed by 21 aftershocks (as of 4/21/08). Recorded and verified aftershocks ranged from magnitude 1.2 to 4.6. Three events of magnitude 3.0 or greater have been recorded. Two of the events were magnitude 4.0 or greater. The events have been widely felt. Ground shaking attributed to the magnitude 5.2 event has been reported from northern Georgia to Wisconsin. Reported damage as a result of the earthquakes has been minor.
