Coal Bed Methane

As the demand for natural gas continues to increase, coalbed methane (CBM) is becoming an increasingly important source of methane across the United States. Currently, coalbed methane contributes approximately 10 % of the gas produced in the U.S. Although there is currently no CBM production in Kentucky, a reconnaissance study has indicated that coal beds in both eastern and western Kentucky may have the potential of producing economic CBM. Currently, there are two on-going projects in western Kentucky to assess this potential. The goal of both projects, which are explained in more detail below, is to obtain fundamental CBM data that is currently lacking in Kentucky. These materials will provide oil and gas operators with basic data to facilitate future exploration and development of coalbed methane resources in the Commonwealth.
