At the Bourbon Limestone Quarry, Bourbon County, an entry is being constructed for access to deeper, underground limestone resources. |
The use of limestone and dolomite as industrial raw materials generally is dependent upon the chemical quality of the stone. Limestone and dolomite deposits across the state have been sampled by KGS to determine their chemical composition. KGS is preparing regional and county resource reports that will present chemical and lithologic data for the sampled sites, and will outline the geographic and stratigraphic distribution of potential sources of industrial-grade stone.
Limestone samples from the Slade Formation (Mississippian) in eastern Kentucky mines and roadcuts currently are being processed and analyzed at KGS facilities. The Slade Formation, which is quarried and mined for construction aggregate, is being tested to determine its potential for industrial markets.
Analysis has been completed on limestone and dolomite of the High Bridge Group (Ordovician) recovered in north-central Kentucky cores. The High Bridge Group is a major source of construction aggregate and chemically pure stone for lime manufacture in central and north-central Kentucky. A report will be prepared on the chemical quality of stone in the cores.
