Bull Purchase Program
D. Bullock
Department of Animal and Food Sciences
Project Description
This program is funded through the Ag Development Board as a model program. The beef extension group has been instrumental in developing guidelines and delivering educational programs to support the program. In 2007, 31 counties participated and almost $1 million were distributed.
Impact
The impact of this program is wide sweeping and difficult to measure. It facilitates better selection and performance recording for seedstock producers, resulting in better genetic evaluations, and improved selection and crossbreeding for commercial producers. Approximately 1,000 bulls were purchased in 2007; if each bull sires 60 calves with an increased value of $25/head that would result in $1.5 million of additional income. Additionally, producers are developing production skills that they will utilize for years to come.
