1998/1999 Abstract
Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech's Block and Bridle Club is at work non-stop during the year to promote animal husbandry and the red meat industry not only on campus, but nation wide. Again this year, our Block and Bridle proved to be the best in the country, placing in the top three of all the categories at the National Convention, held in Fort Worth. Block and Bridle is always making great strides in all they do.

The Virginia Tech judging teams had an exceptional year in 1998 and new teams are forming -- ready for a competitive season. There were a record number of entries in the Block and Bridle Horse Show last fall. The club made a record breaking profit on the BBQ at the Virginia State Fair. An overwhelming attendance of 900 students competed in the spring judging contests. We continue to host or help in important agriculture industry events like the Hokie Harvest Livestock Production Sale, Meat-In Day, Animal Industry Day, Virginia Food Festival, New Student Picnic, Virginia Tech Quadrathalon and Virginia Tech's Homecoming activities. To top that - membership in the club is up to 200! The Little International Livestock Show each April is our most popular event. This is an event that all Block and Bridle alumni, members and friends look forward to every year. It is an event put together entirely by Block and Bridle. The club works months in advance, preparing the grounds and the livestock for this treasured event. Block and Bridle is always proud to sponsor an event that allows any student in the university to get a chance to show either a meat animal or horse. Not everyone is fortunate to grow up on a farm and share in the excitement of raising and showing livestock. Leave it to Block and Bridle to give students of all backgrounds this chance to compete in a showmanship competition. After the Little International Livestock Show, a Ham Sale is hosted in which ham curerers from across the state donate hams to be auctioned off. The money from the hams go to Block and Bridle. Block and Bridle members hardly have time to take a breath during the year, but all our hard work is worth it when we continue to come home from National Convention with an plane-full of awards.
