The Block and Bridle Club of Virginia Tech had an exciting and successful year once again. With over a hundred and fifty dedicated advisors and officers making it all possible. The club was under the leadership of Scott Buchanan as President; Chris Sumner, Vice President; Josh Richman, Secretary; Jenn Hibbs, Alumni Secretary; Kristin White, Treasurer; Matt Welsh, Membership Coordinator; and Ben Blankenship as Marshall. Three outstanding faculty, Dr. Gary Minish, Dr. Cindy Wood, and Dr. John Hall served as our advisors.
The first event of the fall semester was the annual new student picnic, which allowed members to interact with freshman and transfer students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. In September, we sponsored the Horse Show on campus as well as packed our bags and went to the State Fair, where for two weeks we sold our world famous beef, lamb and pork barbeque and promoted the meat animal industry. The semester was brought to an end with the induction of new members and the Secret Santa gift exchange at the Christmas party.
The spring semester was the busiest of the two semesters for the club having many events happening in the spring. In January we sponsored the campus-wide Agriculture Quadrathlon, with the winning team representing Virginia Tech at the Southeastern Regional. Twenty-six members had the time of the lives in Denver at the 1998 National Convention. We came home to the little mountains of Blacksburg, Virginia all smiles for we placed first in chapter activities, and third with our scrapbook. Thanks to the University of Colorado for having an outstanding week of events and activities for us to participate in.
February we had our annual banquet where awards were presented to dedicated members for their involvement in the Block and Bridle Club. We reached out to the youth in Virginia in March having the 4-H and FFA Meats, Livestock, Horse, and Stockman's contest, with a record number of competitors having well over four hundred young agriculturist participate.
One of the highlights of the year was the 76th Little International Show and Ham sale, which allowed members and students campus wide to exhibit livestock and enjoy watching the tough showmanship competition. It was also a time for present members to fellowship with past members and just have a good time.
The Virginia Tech Block and Bridle Club had another year jammed full event to promote animal agriculture and the red meat industry, where friends were made, good times were had, and things got accomplished. It was a year that will stick in our hearts and minds forever.
