2000/2001 Abstract
University of Missouri-Columbia

During the academic year of 2000-01, Mizzou Block and Bridle continued to do what it has been doing for over 75 years, and that is promote animal production agriculture to the diverse audience in Columbia and across the state of Missouri. With more than 120 members, Mizzou Block and Bridle continues to be the largest club in the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources.

Mizzou Block and Bridle meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month during the academic year. We sponsor and participate in several activities such as the Ham Cure and Sale; Ag Week; Little American Royal; Steer and Heifer Show; Milk-a-Cow Booth at the Missouri Ag Day held at the Botanical Garden's in St. Louis; and several food booths at local agricultural events. The fundraisers for the club are the Ham Cure and Sale, occurs in the fall, and the Steer and Heifer Show during the spring. The Ham Cure and Sale is held in Conjunction with the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (CAFNR) "Fall Fest," a day for alumni, faculty, students, and friends to come together. The Steer and Heifer Show brings over 150 Missouri youth and their families to Columbia. The youth will exhibit more than 400 steers and heifers during the three-day event. The Steer and Heifer show is the largest student organized event on campus, and is a key recruiting function for CAFNR.

The Little American Royal is for undergraduate students and combines education with competition as each student may exhibit either beef steers, dairy heifers, horses, sheep, or swine in one of three divisions: experienced, intermediate, or novice. This year we had over 100 participants.

In January 2001, Mizzou Block and Bridle had the honor and privilege of hosting the National Convention in St.Louis. Our goal was to follow the theme, "Pioneering Tomorrows Agriculture" and in doing so we introduced species specific tours, a career fair, and community service opportunities. During the breakout sessions controversial issues such as: animal rights and welfare, Ag policy and government, biotechnology, and family vs. corporate farms, were addressed by nationally and internationally recognized speakers. Mizzou Block and Bridle ended the school year with our annual undergraduate Animal Science Banquet, co-hosted with the Animal Science Department. Faculty, alumni, students, and their families enjoy the evening by recognizing scholarship recipients, internship participants, the MU Livestock Judging Team, the Academic Quadrathalon team, outstanding club members, honorary club members, and Livestock Person of the Year.

Mizzou Block and Bridle has worked hard to maintain the excellence achieved by past Block and Bridle members and will challenge the future members of the club to the same level of excellence for the coming year.
