The Animal Industries Club has had a busy and exciting year. It began with the Annual
Ice Cream Social, where new and returning students mingled with faculty and graduate
students. Everyone enjoyed ice cream that was generously donated by Hiland Dairy.
Land Grant Days were held during the week of September 30. During this week Animal
Industries members assisted Dean Scifres in serving hot dogs and watermelon during
"Dogs with the dean". This was followed on Saturday with the 1st Annual Friends of
Animal Science Reunion. Club members, alumni, and faculty enjoyed visiting at the
Interim Arena on Harmon Road.
The club had several fund raising activities this year. They cured and smoked hams,
which were then marketed for the holidays. The annual charity auction was also held
on December 7. Members also ran a Basketball Concession Stand for eight games.
These fund raisers helped to pay for the expenses during the National Block and Bridle
Convention and other activities throughout the year.
In January, 14 students and two faculty member attended the National Block and Bridle
Convention in Orlando, FL. Everyone enjoyed meeting students from other Animal
Science programs throughout the nation. During the convention we participated in
educational sessions, and went on tours that explored the diverse Florida agriculture.
Tours included large beef, dairy, citrus, and vegetable operations. The environmental
pressures facing Florida agriculture were addressed. The group did take time to see
Mickey Mouse as well.
This year the club, along with the Ozark Cattleman's Association, sponsored a
Livestock Judging Contest for youth. Despite absolutely miserable weather, 25 youth
came out for the event. Club members also assisted the Washington Co. Farm Bureau
with "Kids and Critters". This program enables kids from town to learn about farm
animals through hands on activities.
Throughout the year, members have been actively involved in recruiting for the
department. Several students have volunteered time to assist Dr. A. H. Brown during
the weekend shows and field days that he attends statewide.
