The University of Wyoming Block and Bridle Chapter has approximately fifty current members. The majority of the students are Animal Science Majors, but we also have members from other colleges such as the Engineering and College of Arts and Sciences. The club tries to participate in three to four activities every semester. We also try to participate in the spring dance promoted by Colorado State University's Block and Bridle Club.
The UW B&B Club also is associated with the University of Wyoming's Mascot "Cowboy Joe". He is the pony that is led around the football field when the Wyoming Cowboys score a point. The "Cowboy Joe Handlers" take care of Cowboy Joe and they are all members of the UW B&B Club. The Cowboy Joe Handlers also travel with Cowboy Joe to other states in the Mountain West Conference.
The UW Block and Bridle Club's annual events consist of the "Wyoming Club Calf Classic Futurity" held the third weekend in June. The second Sunday in October consists of the "Annual Club Calf Sale". Ten consignors provide approximately 50 club calves for buyers to purchase. The calves that are bought at the sale are also able to compete in the following years Wyoming Club Calf Classic Futurity. The last Friday in October is home for the "Little International Livestock Show". This is where students in Animal Science 1010 compete using their showmanship skills with swine, beef, or sheep. A ham auction also takes place along with other fun activities such as pig penning, dizzy dummy roping, and sheep dressing. T-shirts are also sold annually at the show, along with dinner as fundraisers for the club. A barn dance follows the show where fun can be had by all.
A "graduate and faculty vs. undergraduate flag football" game is new this year to the UW B&B Club. It is held in the fall along with socializing over pizza afterwards. We also have a Christmas party in December to vote for new club officers and decorate the Animal Science Department's Christmas tree. The spring activities consist of the "Animal Science Academic Quadrathlon". This is held in mid-February so the winning four team members can represent UW at the "Western Section Academic Quadrathlon", which will be held in Idaho this spring. Also a "faculty and graduate student vs. undergraduate softball game" is held a couple weeks prior to spring finals. We also have the annual "Block and Bridle Club Banquet" before school adjourns. This banquet consists of judging team awards, club member and animal science faculty recognition, along with business donation recognition. A barn dance also follows this function as a fundraiser.
The UW B&B Club concentrates on promoting membership and involvement in agricultural acitivities. If you would like to contact us, you can e-mail us at brethess@uwyo.edu, thansen@uwyo.edu , or chad@uwyo.edu
