The University of Tennessee has had an exceptional year here in Knoxville! Our basketball teams are prospering and that has boosted the moral throughout Big Orange Country. The excitement has also affected our Block & Bridle Club activities this year with a definite winning attitude.
Our new slate of officers for the 1999-2000 year brought fresh enthusiasm to our chapter activities. Led by Andy Burchfield, President, and assisted by Sam Kinsey, Vice President; Betsy Greene, Secretary; Kristina Barber, Treasurer; Suzanne Womac, Reporter; and Committee Chairs, Beth Tucker, Charlotte Leibrock, Luke West, Lydia White, Lisa White, Jeremiah Harrison, Kelly Kerr, Charlie Young, Jennifer Hatcher, Bobby Amburn, Amanda Smith, Laura Foster, and Lake Elliott, our chapter embarked on a fresh slate of activities.
In March 2000, 17 chapter members and officers as well as a chapter adviser attended the National Convention, which was a feat in itself, since our transportation was a 15-passenger van. It was a very close-knit group that arrived in Atlanta for the National Convention. The group was comprised of several freshman and sophomore members and new officers who had the opportunity to learn more about agriculture programs and club activities across the United States.
The Club Calf Sale in October 1999 provides both a fund raising and service activity for the members. Animals are consigned by breeders to the sale. Prior to the sale, members are assigned an animal which they must halter break and groom for the show and sale. This year a total of 25 head were consigned and sold.
The Rocky Top Classic in December 1999, is a follow-up activity to the Club Calf Sale. The Classic allows young people an opportunity to get familiar with show techniques, grooming and showmanship before the money shows begin. It also brings prospective Ag students and B&B members to the campus as well as providing an opportunity to show the calf they purchased at the Club Calf Sale. This year 16 heifers and 17 steers were exhibited.
In the fall and spring each year, UTB&B promotes the campus and its programs at Ag Day, an event that draws people on to the campus for educational programs and exhibits, ending with attending a football game in the fall. Exhibits are set up by each department and club to inform people of their purpose and activities. This year in addition to our exhibit, our chapter sponsored a petting zoo for the children attending.
Other chapter activities included the Club Lamb Sale, which followed the same format as the Club Calf Sale. This activity provided an opportunity for youth from East and Middle Tennessee to purchase a quality lamb for competition.
A variety of community service, leadership and education activities completed the year. The largest and most involved activity of the year is Roundup, where the entire membership works together to present a statewide youth competition and college show featuring beef, dairy, sheep, and swine. The culmination of the show is acknowledgement and recognition of agriculture programs across the state and on the campus of the University of Tennessee.
