The University of Tennessee Block and Bridle Club started with the annual Animal Science Smoker. This departmental picnic is sponsored by the B&B Club to gather students with an interest in animal agriculture. Later that month, club members served as "corn cops" for the Maple Lane Farms "Corn Maize". The maze ran from September through October and netted the club $4000. The club then provided a display for the UT Institute of Agriculture's Ag Day that had approximately 1,800 visitors. During UT's College of Agriculture Varsity Visit, the club prepared lunches and answered questions for 600 FFA members visiting the.
In October, our club held its annual Club Calf Sale. This year consigners sold calves that went to 4-Hers and FFA members across Tennessee and Virginia. The sale averaged $554 with a net profit of $700 for the club.
We held our annual Rocky Top Classic Steer and Heifer Show in December. The show had 34 exhibitors with 63 head of cattle competing for a grooming chute, director chairs, and various prizes and cash. Incentives were given to competitors exhibiting cattle purchased from our Club Calf Sale. Also, our club participated in a college wide sponsored Christmas Party for inner city minority children. We provided a petting zoo and nativity scene. In addition, we sponsored a toy and stuffed animal drive for under privileged children and challenged clubs campus wide to participate.
In January 10 students and 1 advisor traveled to St. Louis, Missouri for the National Block and Bridle Convention. We spent 5 days learning about agriculture and seeing the sights of St. Louis.
We hosted our Block & Bridle Round-up in March. This event includes Livestock, Dairy and Meats Judging clinics and contests along with a Quiz Bowl for over 550 statewide FFA and 4-H members. This event is held annually in conjunction with our collegiate showmanship contest.
Finally, in April we provided an interactive display for the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Open House. This event brought approximately 6,000 visitors to our campus. We then held our annual Club Lamb Sale. The consigners brought a total of 37 lambs. The sale averaged $137.06 per lamb, and the club made a profit of $495. In honor of two retiring professors in the Animal Science Department, we held a Spring Smoker, followed by the Animal Science Banquet as our final activity.
