The Block & Bridle Club at Pratt Community College is a small student organization, but is recognized as one of the most active clubs on campus.
The club held its annual Ag Olympics in October during Rodeo Week. The olympics is a team event, including such activities as stacking hay, pitching horseshoes, flipping a bucket, roping a roping dummy, and barrel racing using a wheelbarrow and a blindfolded pusher. This year’s event was the largest ever, with 10 teams entered. The entry fee for each team was of one can of food or $1 per team member. Cash entry fees purchased additional canned food. More than 60 cans of food were donated to the Pratt County Food Bank.
At the PCC College Rodeo in October, the Block & Bridle Club held its annual Rodeo Breakfast. We served more than 200 servings of biscuits and gravy at this year’s breakfast, along with orange juice, soft drinks, and doughnuts. The club puts together this breakfast each year as a service to the contestants and spectators during the Saturday morning slack performance of the rodeo.
Also in October, the club cooperated with the PCC Rodeo Team to host a team roping event as a fundraiser. The club made over $400.
In November, the PCC Athletic Department, Block & Bridle, and the Livestock Judging Team worked together to hold our second annual chili cook-off. We charged $25 per team to enter, and $5 per person for the opportunity to taste the different kinds of chili. There were 21 teams entered, up from 17 last year.
Also in November, the club cooperated with the Livestock Judging Team and the VICA club in sales of citrus fruit as well as meat products from two local meat markets. The fruit and sausages were delivered in December right before the end of the semester. All three groups made money, and we look forward to a bigger and better sale next year.
The club organized a display of our activities at the PCC Open House in March. Club members staffed the display to answer questions from the prospective students and parents in attendance.
Six members and our advisor flew to Atlanta in March for the National Convention. Highlights included the tours, the educational and leadership seminars, and sightseeing around Atlanta.
In May, the club held a hamburger fry at Sixth Street Park in Pratt to celebrate the accomplishments of the year. At that meeting, Kelly Stephens was elected President and Steve Clark was elected Vice President for the 2000-2001 school year.
Club officers for 1999-2000 were Mandi Stewart, Hutchinson, Kansas, President;
Kelly Stephens, Fredonia, Kansas, Vice-President; Nikki Osner, Kingman, Kansas,
Secretary; Steve Clark, Amorita, Oklahoma, Student Senate Representative; and
