The Block & Bridle Club at Pratt Community College is small, but it is one of the most active clubs on our campus.
Each October, the club hosts several activities as a part the week leading up to the PCC Intercollegiate Rodeo. The Ag Olympics included activities such as stacking hay, pitching horseshoes, flipping a bucket, roping a roping dummy, and barrel racing using wheelbarrow and a blindfolded pusher. Six teams entered, with the entry fee of one can of food or $1 per team member. Cash entry fees purchased additional canned food. More than 80 cans of food were donated to the Pratt County Food Bank.
Saturday of Rodeo Week was a big day as the chapter had its annual Rodeo Breakfast at the arena in the morning, then helped with the Ag Open House in the afternoon. At the breakfast, members served more than 200 portions of biscuits and gravy. At Ag Open House, chapter members spoke to prospective students about campus life, including student activities such as Block & Bridle.
In December, members sold more than 600 cow-shaped cookies to raise funds to attend the national convention. All eleven members met at Dr. Hunter#s house to mix cookie dough; roll and cut out cookies; and bake, ice, and wrap the cookies.
Ten members traveled to Denver in January for the National Convention. Skiing the Rockies was a highlight, but we also enjoyed the ranch tours, educational seminars, and the National Western Stock Show.
In March, chapter members put together a display about Block & Bridle for the annual PCC Open House, then manned the booth to answer questions for prospective students and their parents.
A new activity for the club this year was to host a team roping event as a fundraiser. With help from the PCC Rodeo Team, the club held the roping in April. Ninety-two teams entered, and the club cleared nearly $600.
In May, we traveled to Hutchinson, Kansas, to the Lone Star Steakhouse to celebrate the year#s activities..
This year, the Agriculture Department hosted a reception after graduation to honor graduating agriculture students, Block & Bridle members, and rodeo team members. Club members helped set up the room, serve refreshments, and clean up afterwards.
Chapter officers for 1997-98 were Stephanie McCune, Latham, Kansas, President; Kilee Woods, Mulvane, Kansas, Vice-President; Tina Etling, Ensign, Kansas, Secretary; Toni Wesley, Lake City, Kansas, Student Senate Representative; and Dr. Bill Hunter, Advisor.
