OSU Block and Bridle kicked off the year at
the annual Agricultural Roundup, promoting B&B to incoming freshmen and transfer
students. Members created a booth that educated freshmen and transfer students
about our club. All students that stopped by the booth were invited to an ice
cream social that brought old members and new prospects together.
Fall Smoker:
In September members gathered for a pot-luck dinner, a barbeque, a bonfire and a paddle branding. 41 new initiates were present to be initiated in to the OSU chapter of Block and Bridle. Twenty-nine returning members also attended the smoker to watch new members brand their Block and Bridle paddle in which all new and old members sign the paddles.
The Little International
In November we reinstated the Little International, members of the college were encouraged to participate in various showmanship jackpots. A team made up of three people also competed in a jackpot fitting contest that was added to the Little International for the first time. In addition many faculty and community leaders competed in the “Who’s Who Showmanship Contest.” It was successful with 80 participants of students from all across campus and many faculty members.
Showmanship Clinic
Following shortly after the ‘Little I’ was the second annual Block and Bridle Livestock Showmanship Clinic. We advertised to 4H and FFA members throughout the state by placing ads in various agriculture magazines and web sites in addition to contacting all FFA advisors and county 4H agents. We had 75 participants of various ages, ranging from 5-14.
Angle Giving Tree
At Christmas we provided for two local children that had angels on a giving tree. We spent $200.00 on presents that the children had listed.
Tree Decorating
Agricultural Council took into consideration all the families that do not get to have trees at Christmas due to funding. OSU’s agricultural council bought an artifical tree for each club and the clubs decorated the trees. The trees were displayed in offices and halls located in the College of Ag and the Department of Animal Science. After they were displayed the trees then distributed to needy families throughout Stillwater.
Christmas Party
To show our appreciation for our members throughout the first semester we hosted a Christmas party in which we had a nontraditional Christmas dinner and members exchanged gifts!
Bonanza
In the spring we concentrated much of our effort on the second annual Block and Bridle Bonanza. The jackpot show was held February 12 and 13 at the Payne County Fair Grounds. Saturday we held the lamb portion of the contest and Sunday was the hog show. The mission of the Bonanza is to encourage competition among showmen across the state. The participants pay a fifteen dollar fee for each animal they enter. The show is 100 percent pay-back, so they receive every dollar back.
Educational Social
For all the hard work and time members put into the years events we went on an educational/social trip to Fort Worth Texas. Fifteen members went to Fort Worth Stockyards and attended a historical walking tour. For the social members were entertained by Mark Chestnut at Billy Bob’s.
Alpha Zeta/Aggie X Benefit Dinner
As philanthropy projects during the spring semester we donated $200 to the ‘Alpha Zeta/Aggie X Benefit Dinner’ for Raylen Dorman Gundy a two-year old little girl whom must have costly breathing treatments every few weeks.
Appreciation Luncheon
For staff/faculty appreciation day in the Animal Science Department, we provided a free lunch of cold cuts, cheese, fruit and desserts, in which the members prepared. The first annual ‘Faculty Appreciation Luncheon’ was a huge success!
Secretaries Day
As a token of our appreciation we provided each secretary a small bouquet of flowers for all their hard work and dedication to the students and professors.
Awards Banquet
To conclude our year we held an awards banquet at Hideaway pizza. New members were given their Block and Bridle certificates of participation, new officers were inducted and six scholarships for two hundred dollars were given to members with the most qualifying applications.
