The OSU Saddle and Sirloin Club once again had a fantastic outcome for the 1998-1999 year. Club members hosted, gathered, and socialized with the Buckeye Dairy Club at our annual spring picnic one last time before the school year ended. The Scarlet and Gray Lamb Show followed one week later in June.
Club members relaxed during the summer only to gear up for the Farm Science Review in September, where they and new members for the upcoming year worked diligently over 4 days to make this one of the biggest fundraisers for Saddle and Sirloin.
All during the fall, committee chairs and members planned for two more fundraisers, the Scarlet and Gray Spectacular Hog Show and the Scarlet and Gray Extravaganza Steer Show in January. The Animal Science Awards Banquet was also held in January where scholarship recipients and other honors were awarded. Then 15-20 club members traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, to attend the National Block and Bridle convention.
February brought fun as we held our annual Little International, in which OSU students and club members were invited to participate in a day of showmanship in the hog, horse, beef, and/or sheep divisions. In March youth came from schools and 4-H to take part in the Livestock Judging Contest held at the Ohio State University Equine Facility. Also, Saddle and Sirloin members participated in the bull clip, which is another one of our club's largest fundraisers.
The last month before the school year ended with the Scarlet and Gray Club Pig Classic Preview Show as well as a few service and social activities. These included cleaning up the site of the old boar test station, teaching basic agricultural concepts and facts to inner-city children, playing a paintball war game at our chapter vice president's home, and honoring the Department of Animal Sciences Chair with a hog roast. It has been a wonderful ending to a very successful year, and we look forward to the challenges and activities for the upcoming year!!
