The Ohio State University Block & Bridle Club, known to the Buckeyes as Saddle & Sirloin, started their 2001-2002 activities before classes had even begun.  Farm Science Review was underway in mid-September and members were already enthusiastically involved at our food stand grilling pork chops and serving food to the thousands of exhibitors and visitors at the event.  The club was also an integral part of preparing and serving food to Ohio’s legislators during the Vice President’s Luncheon.  These two events serve as major fundraisers.

One of S&S’s major events for Fall Quarter is the scholarship banquet.  The club works with the Animal Science department to recognize recipients of departmental scholarships.  In addition, at the end of the quarter the club holds a co-curricular educational banquet that honors the current Animal Science judging teams, as well as former teams.  There is a great sense of pride that is achieved at these banquets, as most of the recipients and honorees are active members of our club.

Winter Quarter, considered our busiest, was again off to a jump-start before classes had begun with the annual Scarlet & Gray Midwest Showdown.  Held in early January, this junior beef show boasts 568 entrants and is sanctioned by the Ohio Cattleman’s Association as a BEST (Beef Exhibitor Show Total) show.  In addition, to this popular beef show, Winter Quarter is also home to the Scarlet and Gray Market Hog Spectacular.  On February 23rd, S&S held its most anticipated event, The 88th Little International.  This event is a showmanship competition open to all undergraduates who wish to participate.  In addition to showing beef heifers, breeding ewes, market hogs, and horses, students and faculty also have an opportunity to participate in the ham cure and corn beef contest.  The top 5 hams and briskets are auctioned and all proceeds are donated to the Livestock and Meat Judging Teams.  Following the showmanship competition The “Little I” King and Queen are announced, and special recognition is given to distinguished friends of the club in recognition of their efforts.

During Spring Quarter, S&S holds a junior judging contest as well as another hog show.  Following the Prospect Pig Show is Scarlet & Gray Ag Day; S&S prepares lunch and serves as group leaders as well as station facilitators at this event.  This program educates inner-city elementary students about agriculture.

In addition to our major events, S&S holds regular meetings and invites industry representatives to speak with members about current issues.  Also, several social events as well as fundraisers and community service events are organized.  Annually, members also attend the National B&B convention.  Saddle and Sirloin is an organization rich in heritage at Ohio State , and each year members do their best to perpetuate its traditions and ideals.
