Although classes were not in session at
Michigan State University, the Block and Bridle Club held its Northern Exposure
Club Lamb Show at the MSU Pavilion on June 22, 2003. Dan Kiesling and Todd
Wolff co-chaired the event where exhibitors participated in not only the show,
but a poster contest, skillathon and judging contest.
The B&B Club welcomed back students on September 2, 2003 with a meeting in 1260 Anthony Hall. During the meeting, club members presented information on their Study Abroad ventures. Following the meeting, new and returning members gathered for a cookout in the courtyard behind Anthony Hall.
As the fall 2003 semester progressed, we invited industry professionals to speak at our meetings and held informal and formal initiation for new members. With our Club display, we participated in Autumnfest at the MSU Pavilion. Hosted by the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, it brings together students, faculty, alumni and the public on a Saturday during a home football game.
On November 11, we organized a day with Dr. Jennifer Garrett, the technical services director for Monsanto Dairy Business. In the afternoon, she led an interactive workshop that focused on the communication skills that students need for a successful career in agriculture. Later that day, she presented a seminar that addressed the use of rBST in the dairy industry.
During the holiday season, we participated in canned food drives and also made a visit to St. Vincent Home, which is a short-term, 90-day assessment and stabilization program for youth who are unable to successfully live in a home setting. During the visit, B&B members made cookies and played games with the children.
As a close to the fall 2003 semester, members volunteered at the Michigan Winter Classic Beef Show and served as clerks, announcers, ringmen, and directed the make-up ring.
Spring 2004 semester started as busy as ever! The Little International Showmanship competition took place on February 7. Lisa Scramlin, the event's chairperson and last year's Little International champion, coordinated the judges for beef, dairy, sheep, swine and horse, worked with the MSU farm managers to get the animals and organized volunteers. More than 70 students participated in the event.
Later in February, 14 members traveled to Texas for the National B&B Convention. The members enjoyed their trip, but came back even more excited for next year's convention in Denver, Colorado.
On March 27, we held our annual Recognition Banquet at the Michigan Athletic Club. Dene Elliot and Jessica Scrimger co-chaired the event. This year, the club honored Bill McCalla, a prominent leader as a swine breeder, for his contribution to the industry. The club also ran a silent and live auction, honored various club members for their outstanding performance and thanked Dr. David Hawkins for his dedication to the club.
The weekend following Recognition Banquet, we sponsored the Michigan Beef Expo Junior Show. Over 300 youth from Michigan, Indiana and Ohio participated by exhibiting over 500 head of cattle. Jim Gillooly of Indiana judged the heifer show, and Mark McCully of Ohio selected the steers. Allison Meyer, Scott Smalley, Lisa Wheeler and Megan Townsend served as the co-chairpersons for the show. The show was a great success, but wouldn't have been without the help of all of the members who volunteered their time Saturday night for check-in and all day Sunday for the show.
After recovering from Recognition Banquet and Beef Expo, we kept ourselves busy with more events! On April 18 we held a livestock judging contest at the MSU Pavilion for youth from Michigan and Indiana. Brigitte Grobbel and Brit Boehmer served as the event's co-chairs. They organized the contest, which consisted of three cattle, two hog and one sheep class. Members of the current MSU livestock judging team, animal science majors and MSU alumni worked as the contest's officials.
We concluded the academic year by co-sponsoring the Animal Science Spring Picnic with the Dairy and Rodeo Clubs. Dr. Margaret Benson held an awards program for the animal science faculty, staff, and students and the picnic followed.
The MSU Block and Bridle Club had a great 2003-2004 year!
