Yield Loss Prediction Tool for Field-Specific Risk Management of Asian Soybean Rust

Project Updates - UG July 2008

USA, Georgia - July, 2008 (Joe Omielan) - Project Update

We are pleased to welcome collaborators from the University of Georgia at Tifton to the SBR Project. Dr. Bob Kemerait, Extension Plant Pathology and his Post-Doc, Dr. Weibo Dong planted a trial to generate data to validate the SBR yield loss model.

Pictured above (from left to right) are Dr. Bob Kemerait and Dr. Weibo Dong.

The plots were planted June 10, 2008 in 36 inch rows. Two cultivars with different maturity groups were used to get SBR starting at different growth stages. They were AGS 758RR (MG 7) and Prichard RR (MG 8). The disease-free control will be protected with fungicides throughout the season while the late SBR treatment will be protected for part of the season. The early SBR plots will be unsprayed.

Leaf Area Index (LAI) and Light Interception (LI) will be measured during the season along with phenology and disease severity. At the end of the season Harvest Index (HI) and yields will be determined. The calculated yield losses will be compared to those predicted by the model.
