Lateral Aspect of the Tongue

Posteriorly, along the lateral border of the tongue are vertical folds (A). Foliate papillae are found in this region. This form of lingual papilla is poorly developed in the human and are often invaded by tonsillar tissue. Note the "white-capped" filiform papillae (B). Protruding slightly above the dorsal surface of the tongue are the tops of two circumvallate papillae (C). Note their pink coloration indicating a lack of keratinization.
