Paul Potter Receives Distinguished Recognition from Fellow Geologists
Lexington, KY (September 10, 2007) – University of Cincinnati Professor Emeritus Paul Potter has been awarded the John T. Galey Memorial Award by the Eastern Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). Potter taught in the UC Geology Department from 1971 until 1992 and is well-known and respected by his peers for his knowledge of the geology of the Greater Cincinnati region.
The award, the highest honor bestowed by the Eastern Section, recognizes distinguished geoscientists whose outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the geology profession and its application have promoted the improvement of society.
“His career has shown great balance between applied and theoretical geology, as he has worked closely with the petroleum industry as a consultant and given many invited lectures at prestigious institutions,” says the award citation. “He won praise and awards from the states of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, literally his geologic backyard. His contributions to their state geological surveys have been recognized as outstanding and meritorious.”
Potter is the author of Exploring the Geology of the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Region, whose second edition was recently published by the Kentucky Geological Survey. He has authored or co-authored a total of seven books and 134 articles and maps and received other recognitions, including the Pettijohn Award from the Society for Sedimentary Geology for Excellence in Sedimentology and three AAPG Outstanding Educator Awards.
The Eastern Section of the AAPG first awarded the John T. Galey Memorial Award in 1993 in memory of its first president. Potter will receive the award on the opening evening of the Eastern Section’s September16 – 18 annual meeting in Lexington, Ky.
